MHSA Administrative Residency

The principle goal of the administrative residency is to afford the student an opportunity to gain personal experience in applying administrative principles and techniques in an active health care setting. The residency is the period of education and experience during which students will be engaged in the application of the concepts and skills acquired during the didactic portion of their graduate education in a health system setting under the guidance of a preceptor and the residency coordinator. It is an opportunity to integrate prior learning within the practice setting. It provides the student with additional contextual understanding of the profession of health administration.

General Description of the Residency
The residency is a two to six graduate credit hour course. It consists of a minimum of 150 hours of contact hours of working at a selected health care organization under the supervision of a qualified preceptor for each credit hour earned. The residency coordinator is available to help students to choose a residency and will contact the organization to ascertain its willingness to provide a position for the resident. The primary responsibility for the success of the residency falls on the shoulders of the student. The student identifies what is needed and shapes the residency experiences so significant learning opportunities are produced. The beginning of the successful residency experience is a well developed residency plan.

Residency Plan
Each student must develop an educational plan for the residency. A residency plan provides documentation of the goals and objectives the Program, the student, and the institution seek to achieve through the experience. It also describes the methods by which these objectives will be accomplished. The plan should be based upon the educational needs and professional goals of the student. The objectives of the plan should provide a clear understanding and specification of what the student expects to obtain from the residency. The plan must be approved by the residency coordinator and the preceptor. The plan need not be elaborate but consist of the elements described below:

1. The goal and objective statements must address students’ educational and professional development needs.

2. The plan should be responsive to the Program's objectives specified in the Residency Manual.

3. The plan shall contain a proposed work schedule, including total hours as well as starting and ending dates.
