The REACH 2010 project team at FIU, along with Community Based Organization (CBO) coalition partners such as Hispanic Unity of Florida, Urban League of Broward County and Minority Development and Empowerment Inc., have accomplished multiple goals over the past 5 years. The following are some of the project highlights to date:

  • Hundreds of HIV AIDS educational outreach sessions on community streets or in small group presentations have been delivered to residents throughout the 12 target zip-code areas.
  • Culturally competent resident-focused HIV/AIDS outreach activities have been conducted at multiple special events such as: National HIV Testing Day, Hispanic Fest, Gay Pride Parade, Educators’ Alliance “Beach Blitz”, Community ESOL classes, World AIDS Day, Church health fairs, among others.
  • American Red Cross certified staff from our CBO partners has trained hundreds of community volunteers in HIV prevention, and increased their participation at outreach events.
  • HIV prevention supplies such as condoms, latex sheets and lubricant tubes have been presented, discussed, demonstrated and offered to adult community members.  Thousands of these supplies have been distributed to our targeted community free of charge.

  • Our coalition has generated media coverage by participating in dozens of radio and TV talk shows and by publishing several articles in print media.

  • Newsletters and educational materials in English, Creole, and Spanish have been widely distributed.
  • 13 public service announcements (PSA) featuring local spoken-word artists have been broadcast in TV and radio.
  • Multiple presentations about REACH2010 have been made at local, national and international professional forums.
  • Four sets of more than 2000 Computer Assisted Telephone Surveys (CATI) and more than 150 personal interviews to local residents have been conducted as part of our evaluation plan.
