In the post 9/11 era of globalization, scientific and technological advances, and demographic changes, we will be faced with many exciting challenges and opportunities in creating an effective public health system. We are committed to train and educate the future pubic health workforce to meet these challenges focused on population-level health. In accomplishing this goal, we recognize that the health and well being of any community is affected by interaction among multiple determinants. In public health, there is a role for many kinds of expertise. Hence, our faculty and students collaborate with nursing, social work, law, business, and other professional and academic programs at FIU, as well as with local, state, and federal public health agencies. In addition to FIU’s academic programs and resources, students at FIU benefit, in terms of developing cultural competence and international understanding, from the cultural and ethnic diversity of the South Florida community and the proximity to Latin American and the Caribbean region. South Florida also provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of blending of natural and man-made environments and population growth on population health. Our emphasis on involving practitioners, academic researchers, and the community to improve and promote public health is ideal for studying the impact of environmental, social, and behavioral factors beyond the biological risk factors in this part of our nation. We are excited to design for the usual and plan for the unusual challenges of public health in the future. We look forward to hearing from you and invite you to join us in this exciting new program!
